Campitello di Fassa

Description

Campitello di Fassa (Ciampedel in Ladin) is a small town in the province of Trento, located at the foot of the breathtaking balcony of Col Rodella, in Fassa Valley, dominated by the impressive peaks of Sassolungo. It was the first tourist resort in Fassa Valley and it is still a popular holiday destination, both in summer and in winter period, thanks to to its picturesque alleys, the historical center and its buildings, the mountain paths in contact with the nature and the Col Rodella/Belvedere ski resort or the nearby Val Gardena one. Campitello di Fassa offers its guests not only ski and hiking at high altitude, but also the beautiful peaks of Sassolungo, hang gliding, paragliding, golf, rock climbing and hiking on foot, horseback or by mountain bike, perhaps to taste the delicious local cheese products.
The place name derives from the Latin word "campus" (field).
The valley was inhabited by man since Prehistoric times; during the Middle Ages, the whole valley depended on the prince-bishop of Bressanone, whose delegate when there only twice a years; from the XV century he settled there. This submission finished in the XIX century, when the Fassa Valley was annexed to Tyrol and, after the First World War, to the Italian Reign.
Attraction:
- the Church of the Saints Giacomo and Filippo, already mentioned in documents of 1245. It has architectural features of the XVI century, while the bell tower is much more recent, after the former was damaged by a lightening in 1852.
