Description

The Basilicata, also called Lucania, is on two seas, the Tyrrhenian sea and Ionia none. It is a land where the history of man and nature left important traces since ancient times. Jealous guardian of its own identity, it still preserves all the typical features of the countryside. The famous "Sassi" in Matera, declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site, are one of the most peculiar, spectacular and extraordinary settlements in the world. Before the conditions of excessive urbanization would force the inhabitants to evacuate them in 1952, the "Sassi" represented a complex example of integration between man and nature with innovative and technical solutions that it is still possible to admire.
In Basilicata there are Greek ruins (Metaponto), medieval churches and castles (Melfi, Lagopesole), beautiful beaches (Maratea) and lakes (Monticchio lakes) and unspoilt nature (Basilicata shares with Calabria the Pollino National Park).
Finally, why don't you plan a visit to Venosa, birthplace of the Latin poet Horace? Here you can also visit the Medieval Abbey of the Holy Trinity in addition to other interesting monuments.
