Bojano

Description

The town's name refers to the Latin words "bos, bovis" (ox), from which derives Bovianum. Municipality in the province of Campobasso, located close to Monte Crocella, to the right of the river Biferno, on the border with the Campania region, it is a great departure point for those that wish to reach the Matese area, one of the largest massifs of the Italian central-southern regions. The municipal territories include several districts and villages, some very populous and is rich in forests, springs, streams and artificial lakes, where fishing sports are practiced.
Evidence attests that the region was inhabited since the Paleolithic Ages, the original Osci tribes mingled, in the course of the centuries, with the nearby Italic populations. It was the capital of the Pentri, a Samnite tribe, who were directly involved in the wars against Rome, which saw the victory of the latter. It became a Roman Municipium and was later besieged and conquered by Silla during the Social War in the I century B.C. After the decline of the Roman Empire, due to the phenomenon of provoked attacks and raids by the Saracens, Bojano was the first center of the area to be protected by strong fortifications. The presence of several streams and springs, as well as the proximity of an old cattle track that connected with Bojano to Pescasseroli, the entire area submitted an important economic development.
