Campitello Matese

Description

District of the municipality of San Massimo, near Campobasso, it is situated 1429 meters above sea level, in the Matese massif, a mountain range that reaches with Monte Miletto, a height of 2050 meters above sea level and is characterized by the presence of large forests and several natural caves. The main feature of the whole area is the presence of a large valley surrounded by mountains. Campitello Matese is a popular tourist resort, well equipped for winter sports with its seven ski lifts, forty miles of tracks, three trails for cross-country skiing and a plant for artificial snow. In Summer, it becomes an important climatic resort with trekking, biking and horse riding facilities and also focuses on other sports such as paragliding.
Until the early 60s, Campitello Matese was a just an isolated area frequented only in the Summer by shepherds and their flocks. Only in the 70s, local businessmen realized the enormous potential of this area and began its development with the construction of hotels and efficient and modern tourist facilities, followed by the creation of the ski plant and the construction of new road between Campitello Matese and San Massimo, which was added to the old one that lead to Bojano.
