San Michele all'Adige

Charming and picturesque town in the province of Trento, developed along the banks of the Adige, in defense of the ancient communication artery of Roman origin, the Via Claudia Augusta, San Michele Adige (St. Michael an der Etsch) is a well-known wine and a treasure trove of ancient cultures and flavors, nestled in a natural traits that still remains unspoilt.
The community was founded around the old monastery of the Augustinians, founded in the XII century by the Counts Appiano with the approval of the Bishop of Trento.

Sites of Interest:
- the ancient Augustinian monastery, stands where once was located the ancient castle of San Michele Appiano accounts given by the Augustinians in 1143. Numerous documented sources on the life of the monastery, inhabited till 1807, were destroyed because of the numerous sacks suffered. Interesting are the former refectory, the cloister and the cellars.
- the Church of San Michele with its churchyard wall and the elegant façade divided into pilasters, with eight niches occupied by as many statues. Once one crosses the portal of 1688, topped by a statue of the archangel Michael slaying the devil, visitors enter the building: a triumph of the Baroque stucco work and decorations. Most of the paintings and frescoes are the work of Giuseppe Alberti and his school. Beautiful side chapels, full of statues and other precious sacred furnishings. Not to miss the main altar in polychrome marble, the octagonal dome covered with stucco, the choir and the sacristy, which houses valuable statues and paintings;
- the Church of Grumo, a suburb of San Michele, built in 1870;
- the capital of the Zeni, depicting Christ scourged at the pillar and two adoring angels;
- the Museum of the customs and uses of the people of Trentino, an interesting ethnographic collection, housed in the former Augustinian monastery.
