Sorano

Description

The first human settlements are dated back to the III century b.C., durinf the Etruscan-Roman period, but the first certain information on the village, yet, date to the year 862. It consist of a diploma with which the emperor Ludwig II formalized the growth of the Aldobrandeschi's county, where Sorano was the most important centre. As such, the town was a loyal of the Aldobrandeschi and it detached from them in 1312.
The historic center of the town is set on a tuff high cliff and it’s still characterised by a medieval aspect.
The Collegiata Churcj of San niccolo, built between 1290 and 1300, has an irregular latin cross and preserves an interesting wooden cross, donated by Cosimo de’ Medici.
We also suggest the Palazzo Comitale, in renaissance style, Orsinis’ residence, the Orsinis’ Fortress, the remains of the XV century Rocca Ottieresca, the necropolis of San Rocco and the Colombari, deep hole in the tull rock, dated back to the I century b.C..
