Verdellino

Description

Verdellino is a town in the province of Bergamo, located a short distance from the nearby provincial capital city. According to several historians, the name derives from the Latin word "virides" (green), with reference to the extensive grasslands, which used to characterize the area at those times, while others forward the hypothesis of Celtic origins of the name, relying on the prefix "vir".
The first evidence of the existence of a settlement dates back to the Roman times, attested by a fragment of a Roman inscription, which at present, is walled in rear façade of the parish house. The town was mentioned for the first time in a parchment of 1010 with the name of Verdello Minor. During the XIV century it was the scene of violent clashes between the Guelphs and Ghibellines for control of territory. In 1408 the Ghibelline family of the Suardi gained the hegemony and ruled over the area.
Sites of Interest:
- the Parish Church of St. Ambrose, which dates back to the XVII century and features a Baroque portal and inside preserves paintings of great value;
- the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Olmo (XVI century).
