Buccino

Description

A municipality in the province of Salerno, located on eastern slopes of Mount Marzano, between the rivers Tanagro and Platano, Buccino dominates the flat plain of Paestum. Archaeological finds evidence that the area was inhabited since ancient times. Exhibits dating from the Neolithic Ages have been traced in the districts of San Mauro and Piani di Buccino, tombs of Eneolithic period (Copper Age) found in the district of Sant'Antonio and attributed to the ancient civilizations of Gavdos and a small hamlet dating back to the Bronze Age, in the district of Tufariello. Already famous during the Roman times with the name of Volcei, in 90 B.C. it became "municipium. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Buccino submitted a slow and inexorable decline, until at the end of the XII century, it flourished under the rule of the Normans. In 1300, the town was donated by the Anjou to Count Giorgio Lamagna and subsequently to the Caracciolo Family.
Not to miss:
- the Archaeological Urban Park of the Ancient Volcei, that develops under the historical center of the medieval village. Its specificity is given by the fact that the urban area of the ancient Volcei, a Roman municipium, coincides exactly with the current historical center, of which it maintains the road system and the perimeter walls. For this peculiarity it is a reality of great scientific interest and an enormous touristic attraction.
- the National Archaeological Museum of Volcei, housed in the evocative atmosphere of the XV century Convent of Saint Augustine: The exhibition, on four levels, covers an area of about 1600mq;
- the Hermits Congregation Convent of St. Augustine, with a beautiful cloister built in Anjou Durazzo style;
- the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie with a XVI century plan;
- the remains of the Norman castle;
- the VI-XII century rural complex of via Egito, similar in some aspects to the Sassi of Matera;
- the XV century Church of Santa Maria Solditta;
- the natural beauty and landscape of the surrounding areas
