Craco

Description

Town in the province of Matera, located in the hills of the Basilicata Apennines, although its origins date back to the VIII century B.C., the ancient borgo is uninhabited, due to a landslide that forced the local inhabitants to move into the nearby safer districts of Peschiera di Craco and Craco Sant'Angelo. Today it is a ghost town, dominated by the tower and characterized by typical stone houses, narrow streets and alleys, where the atmosphere is almost surreal. For these reasons it is often used as a film set.
Craco was mentioned for the first time in a document of 1188 with the name "Graculum" and in the XV century it was part of a fief, ruled by Attendolo Sforza of Cotignola.
From the tower it is possible to admire the enchanting view of the calanchi (badlands).
