Parghelia
Description
A beautiful seaside resort in the province of Vibo Valentia, overlooking the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods), at short distance from Tropea. The coastline of Parghelia is characterized by sandy beaches alternating with coves and cliffs, like the famous one of "Pizzuta" with its well known "scoglio del palombaro" (rock of the deep-sea diver), from where it is possible to admire a beautiful view of the entire coast and of the island of Stromboli in the distance.
The name derives from "Paralj'a" (from Greek "beach, coastline").
The history of the village dates back to Norman Ages and in later centuries it submitted the same fate of the nearby city of Tropea, of which it was one of 23 districts until 1806, when it received its own autonomy.
Sites of Interest:
- the Church of St. Mary of Porto Salvo, built in 1745, is one of oldest and most valuable examples of Neoclassical architecture. At the center of ceiling it is possible to admire a painting which represents one of the several Saracen incursions that the local population had to face in the past;
- the Church of St. Andrew, erected after the 1905 earthquake that destroyed the whole town;
- Palazzo Meligrana, located in the heart of town center.
