Pescasseroli

Description

Administrative head office of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, Pescasseroli is a town in the province of L'Aquila, situated on a vast plain, not far from the source of the river Sangro in the heart of the Marsicani mountains. In Winter it becomes a popular ski resort with its 20 km of tracks and features one of the most beautiful mountain views in the region, surrounded by forests of beech, pines, firs, oaks and maples.
The name derives from the Latin words "Pesculum Serulae" (rock outcropping from the Sangro).
It origins attribute the legendary foundation of the village to the Peilgna populations, while during the Middle Ages it belonged to various families, such as accounts of Celano, those of di Sangro, of d'Aquino, the Marquis of Vasto, and to Vittoria Colonna and Maria of Aragona.

Not to miss:
- the remains of the Castle of Mancino;
- the Abbey of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1100, in which are preserved a precious wooden choir, a cross and a crucifix of the Sulmona school of the XVII century;
- the Palazzo Sipari (1839) seat of the foundation, named after Erminio Sipari and birth place, in 1866, of the famous Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce.
