Sirolo

Description

The town's name honours Sirius, one of General Belisarius centurions, that defeated the Goths and to whom, the Emperor Justinian assigned this area. Municipality in the province of Ancona, located South of Monte Conero, today, is a well known seaside resort overlooking a cliff, from where visitors can enjoy a splendid view over the sea. The town still has the typical features of the medieval village and is surrounded by fortified walls and a watch tower. The area features four famous beaches, one of these is the beach of "Two Sisters", called so, due to the presence of two "Faraglioni" (two stacks of rock that emerge from the sea, similar to the more famous ones of Capri), symbol of the town, which attracts many tourists. It is highly requested touristic destination thanks to the beauty of the coastline, to the purity of its waters and the various trekking and biking trails and paths, present here.
The area was originally inhabited by the Piceni, as evidenced by the discovery of a necropolis, full of interesting finds, after which it submitted a period of Roman colonization. After the dispersion of the Roman Empire, the town submitted several attacks and to defend themselves, the inhabitants built walls and fortifications. During the medieval period, Sirolo, a castle was built and subjected by the Counts Cortesi, while in the XIII century it submitted the domain of the city of Ancona, becoming one of its fortifications. In a later period the town became part of the Papal States, until it proclaimed its independence and thereafter experienced a period characterized by a degree of calm.
