Stintino

Description

The town's name derives from Sassari dialect and refers to the peculiar intestine shape of the peninsula on which the town stands. Municipality in the province of Sassari, located at the north-western Gulf of the Asinara, is a great starting point to reach the island of the same name, as well as being a famous seaside resort with modern tourist facilities. The town is known for its beautiful beaches, such as: la Pelosa, characterized by fine white sand, which is located next to a second smaller beach, known as the Pelosetta and for the small islands of Torre Aragonese and Isola Piana. In the municipal area is the lake of Casaraccio which, with the nearby lake of Pilo, provide a superb habitat for numerous species of birds.
The foundation of the town is fairly recent. In 1885 the Italian State built a hospital and a prison on the isle of Asinara and the local residents, mostly fishermen and farmers, were obliged to move away to the peninsula, located nearby and which belonged to Nurra of Sassari. Stintino became an independent municipality in 1988.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church, entitled to the Immaculate Conception, is located in the town center, opposite to the main square. It is a building of old foundation and preserves within important artworks, including a valuable painting, a statue of the Immaculate and another one depicting the Madonna della Difesa;
- l'Isola Piana, located opposite to the beaches of la Pelosa and la Peolsetta, is totally flatland and is home to the Tower of Finance, a building of Aragon origins. The island was once owned by the family Berlinguer;
- the promontory of Capo Falcone, covered by a typical Mediterranean vegetation and takes its name from the XVI century Saracen watchtower built here;
- the Aragonese tower, or of the Falcone, was built in the second half of the XVI century for defensive purposes;
- the beach of La Pelosa of extremely impressive and uncommon beauty;
- the old centre, an ancient fishing village;
