Castellina in Chianti

Description

Castellina in Chianti is a lovely town, set among the Sienese hills, founded by the Etruscans, as many relics found in this area prove (necropolis, potteries, the Mount Calvary Tumulus - four tombs oriented towards the four cardinal points -). During the Middle Age it had an important strategic-military role in the struggles between the cities of Florence and Siena, becaming a Florentine outpost; then it was the adminitrative center of the Chianti League (which was also composed by Gaiole and Radda) and was sacked by Siena between XIV and XV century: for this reason Florence decided to reinforce the difensive walls, making use of Filippo Brunelleschi's help.
Castellina in Chianti is rich in castles, fortresses (some of which were local landowners' residences) and churches in Medieval, Romanesque and Neoclassic style; it represents a perfect combination between an enchanting landscape, an excellent cuisine and historical beauties unique in the world.
