Greve in Chianti

Description

Inhabited many centuries ago, Greve in Chianti became a renowned trade center during the Middle Age, seeing that it was located between two important routes, Via Francigena and Via Volterrana. The interests of many castles situated in the vicinity of the town were centered on Greve in Chianti's market, as for example the castle of Montefioravalle (also known as the castle of Monteficalle), the castle of Panzano and that one of Lucolena.
The Church of St. Peter in Sillano is already mentioned in a document dated 884 and presents many elements of the Lombard Romanesque style; the Church of St. Cresci, XII century, is devoted to the most important evangelizer of the area; the Church of St. Leonino, with its beautiful portico, preserves many important works of art, such as a triptych by Mariotto di Nardo, another one by Maestro di Panzano and a panel by Meliore di Jacopo. The Church of St. Donato a Mugnano (rebuilt on 1934) and the Propositura of St. Croce (rebuilt in neo-Renaissance style in 1833 and designed by Luigi de Cambray-Digny) have to be visited.
