Comerio

Description

Comerio is a town in the province of Varese, located at a few kilometers from the provincial capital, between the southern boundary of the Natural Park of Campo dei Fiori and Lake Varese. It is located in an area inhabited since the Neolithic Ages by a Ligurian population, that lived in dwelling villages built here. The settlement was later inhabited by the Etruscans and then by the Celts, that named the town "kunmaer". Occupied by the Roman army in 194 B.C., the Gaul Transpadana area became the Eleventh Region (undecima) only in 42 B.C. From this period onwards, Comer became administratively dependent to the town of Como and militarily to the camps of Briandronno and Laveno. It was'mentioned for the first time in a deed of 769 with the name of "Gummeri".
Among the sites of interest, not to miss:
- the Church of San Celso, a national monument, which shows the ancient location of the original urban center of the town. Erected by local craftsmen, it reveals the involvement of Comacini artists, especially in the forms of the tower. The present building was part of the larger complex of the Abbey of San Celso.
