Grosio

Description

Town of the Valtellina area, in the province of Sondrio, Grosio was the site of human settlement since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the rural inscriptions (2200-1000 B.C.) found on the "Rupa Magna", the largest archaeological monument in Valtellina. It was feud of the Venosta Family since 1355 and became important for the extensive trade with Venice through the mountain passage "passo Mortirolo" from the XVI century onwards.
It features restful landscapes, artistic and historical buildings to admire, which make of Grosio a resort of great importance.

Not to miss:
- the remains of the Castello of San Faustino, inside the Park famous for its stone carvings, built in the year 1000 and at first property of the bishop of Como, and then of the Venosta;
- the New Castle, also located inside the same park, built by the Visconti in XIV century;
- Villa Visconti-Venosta, today seat of the Civic Museum, a beautiful example of a noble Summer residence;
- the parish of St. Joseph (XVII century);
- the Church of St. George (XII-XV century);
- the home of the artist Cyprian Valiant, also known as the "Raphael of the Valtellina.
