Melilli

Description

Mellili is a town in the province of Siracusa. The place name derives from the Latin word "melum", meaning apple tree. During the centuries it played an important role for its strategic position between Siracusa and Augusta. It was territory property up to the 14th century and belonged to Augusta County. It was destroyed by the earthquakes in 1542 and 1693 and rebuilt later.
Amonf the most important monument of the town, we have to mention the Cathedral of San Nicolò, with XVIII century paintings by Olivo Sozzi, the Church of San Sebastiano, with its majestic baroque style façade, projected by the Siracusa architect Nicolò Sapia, with XVIII century paintings by Sozzi, such as the"Coronation of San Sebastiano" and "The Triumph of the Faith", and a fine marble altarpiece representing the"Deposition of San Sebastiano".
From the archaeological point of view the remains of the Greek colony of Megara Hyblaea and the protohistoric site of Thapsos worth a visit.
