Palo del Colle

Description

Located on the top step of the Murge, Palo del Colle could be identified with the ancient Apulian village that Pliny the Elder called "Palio".
During the Middle Ages the settlement submitted a sharp increase in population due, largely, to the emigration of people who took refuge from the coast inland to escape the constant pirate attacks.
The Mother Church seems to be inspired by Apulian-Romanesque style and proportions to the cathedral of Bari. Due of the subsequent remakes, little is left of the original structure. The Bell Tower, 49 meters high, decorated with mullioned windows and ending with a pyramidal spire, is one of the few original parts.
The Church is a basilica plan with one nave and two aisles and the façade, divided into three by pilasters, has three portals in the Renaissance style that in the center are flanked by Corinthian columns of travertine.
