Serralunga d'Alba

Description

Serralunga d'Alba in the province of Cuneo, is a small and picturesque medieval village in the Langhe area, that over the centuries, has preserved its urban structure, with its narrow streets and concentrically arranged houses around a small fortress, which dominates the town. The town's foundation coincides with the construction of the castle, about a thousand years ago. It was a possession assigned to Bonifacio Del Vasto, while later it was ceded to the Del Carretto, to the Marquis of Saluzzo, to the Falletti of Barolo and finally to the Baldi of the Bra.
Sites of Interest:
- the Castle, now owned by the Italian State, in 1950 was restored thanks to the then President Luigi Einaudi. Built by the Falletti di Barolo, it impresses with its slender shape, a typical of Gothic architecture. Inside, in the Hall of Valvassori, are preserved splendid frescoes, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Catherine.
- the Parish Church of San Sebastiano, built between 1886 and 1888, in the same place where once stood the parish church of St Benigno, demolished because in ruins. The sacristy houses a XVII century painting attributed to Annibale Carracci, and the frescoes in the apse are by Sebastiano Nizza.
