Fabro

Description

Fabro is a small town in the province of Terni, set in the south-western part of the Umbria region, very near the border with Lazio and Tuscan regions. It was a fortified village in the past and its history was linked to that of Orvieto.
The place name probably derives from "faber" meaning blacksmith, referring to the ancient craft, also symbolized in the municipal coat of arms.
The place was inhabited both by the Etruscans and by the Romans, as the remains founded in the area testify.
The Castle, set on a panoramic hill on the left hand of the Chiani river, was built during the XI century and renovated several times during the centuries (the renovation of the XVI century was directed by the famous architect Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane). Today it is a private property and kept intact its original structure, with defensive walls and cilindric tower.
We also mention the Church of San Martino, projected by Giovanni Caproni in the XIX century, and the XIX century Palazzo Comunale.
