Terni

Description

Located between two rivers (Serra and Nera), Terni is also known as "the city of lovers", because St. Valentine was the bishop of this city and his remains are preserved in the Basilica of San Valentino.
Its present-day appearance, mostly rebuilt after the heavy bombardments, to which it was subjected during World War II, is mostly modern and dynamic. Even though, the city preserves a part of its old town center and some impressive monuments.
Among these, we have to point out in particular the Roman amphitheater, the theater, the Foro, the Arch of San Damiano, the remains of the Roman town of Carsulae; but also the XIII century Church of San Francesco, in Gothic style, the small Church of Sant'Alò, an ancient Romanesque jewel, the Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, refurbished in the XVII century, the Romanesque tower of Barbarasa, typical Medieval tower-house.
Moreover, Terni is interesting for its modern architecture, such as: the Aquare entitled to Tacito with its fountain, largo Villa Glori and Corso del Popolo, which were realized by Ridolfi and the obelisque "Lancia di Luce" is attributed to the artist Arnaldo Pomodoro.
Finally, at 6km distance from the town centre it is possible to admire the impressive Marmore waterfalls, the tallest in Europe, with their 165 meters in height
