Vocca

Description

A Tiny mountain village in the province of Vercelli, located at 75 kilometers from the main regional capital, Vocca is part of the Valsesia Mountain Comunity. The territory is distributed between 490 and 1827 meters above sea level and is washed by the river Sesia. The town's economy is predominantly devoted to agriculture.
The presence of settlements in the valley of the Sesia is documented since the Prehistory: Over the next centuries the town submitted the domain of the Romans, the Barbarians and the Lombards. During the Middle Ages, Walser populations from the Valais area settled here. During the Dukedom Ages, the territory was ceded to the Duchy of Milan at first, then to the Savoy and finally to the French. Vocca was part of the Parish of Varallo, from which it became autonomous in 1585. Just before the Risorgimento period, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Throughout the next centuries, Vocca shared the same fate and historical events of all the other nearby localities of whole Piedmont region, especially, the most important episodes of the XX century: between war, dictatorship and the partisan resistance.

Not to miss:
- the Parish of St. Maurizio, built between 1769 and 1777, features a single nave plan, paved with marble chancel and delimited by balustrades. One of the four chapels houses a famous painting of the Virgin and Child with Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, a masterpiece, dated 1833, created by the artist Dedominici, which was also the author of the local coats of arms and representation of same artwork with the Madonna and St. Maurice. Of interest and great value is also a painting, dated 1467, in which are depicted the Virgin and Child with Saints Maurice and Mark. The rich decorations in the dome are attributed to the Orgiazzi Family;
- the Oratory of Our Lady of the Snows in the village of Sassiglioni, which contains a series of valuable paintings;
- the Oratory of St Bernard of Mentone;
- the Church of Our Lady in the district of Fossati;
- the Church of San Grato;
- the Church of St. John the Baptist;
- the Church of San Michele;
- the Church of the Marriage of the Virgin Mary;
- the Town Hall, an elegant building, dated 1837.
