Ciampino

Description

It was a district of the nearby town of Marino until 1974, Ciampino is an important economic and industrial hub of the province of Rome, situated between the capital and the area known as Castelli Romani. It is the seat of the International Airport "Giovan Battista Pastine", commonly known as Roma Ciampino, a military airport recently opened also to civilian traffic. The city's name derives from Giovanni Justin Ciampini, a priest, scientist and archaeologist of the XVII century. The development of the city begins in the first half of the XX century, when the Società Anonima Cooperativa Colli Parioli acquired the lands that belonged to the Colonna Family and created a first draft of the city.
During the construction of the railway, remains of a Roman villa, that once belonged to Quinto Voconio Pollione, were brought to the light. Inside the building several statues and objects were found, exhibits now preserved in some of the most important Italian and International museums, such as: the Apollo lyre (Vatican Museums), the Apollo Phitios (Palazzo Valentini), a hero, a Marsia, a Vestal, Corinthian capitals and the Iliac Tablets (Capitoline Museums), the Apotheosis of Homer (British Museum, London ).
