Patti

Description

Patti is a town in the province of Messina, set on the Tyrrehian coast. It was founded in 1094 under the domination of Ruggiero II d'Altavilla. During the Warofthe Sicilian Vespers the city paid for its fidelity to the Angevins with its destruction by fire ordained by Federico II of Aragon. The city recovered, became part of the royal domain, and was again burned down in 1544 by the pirate Ariadeno Barbarossa.
The XVIII century Cathedral of San Bartolomeo preserves the tomb of Quenn Adelasia, mother of the great Norman King, Roger II, who on the same spot had already built a previous church to preserve her mortal remains. Among the various works contained in the cathedral is the outstanding Madonna and Child, a panel painting by Antonello de Saliba.
A beautiful Roman villa, with valuable mosaics has been founded in these years about 1 km far from the town. For its beauty, bradth and interest can be compared to that one of Piazza Armerina.
