Petralia Sottana

Description

Petralia Sottana is a town in the province of Palermo, set in the Madonie Natural Park. It was inhabited since the Prehistorian Age by Sican population. It passed under the control of the Romans, Arabs and Normans, who built there a castle. It was mentioned for the first time in a document of the XIV century, with the name od "Petralia inferior", in order to distinguish it from "Petralia superior".
The Church of Assunta was built in the XVII century and its façade is characterised by a XV century beautiful portal in gothic-catalan style, the only architectural feature surviving from the pre-existing building. Inside it is possible to admire a baroque style organ, statues by Gagini and his workshop, a XV century triptych, paintings by Giuseppe Salerno and, in the sacristy, a baroque style cabinet, precious fabrics and goldware.
Among the other churches of the town, we have to mention the Church of Santa Maria della Fontana (XVI-XVII century), with a beautiful portal in gothic-catalan style and masterpieces by the Gagini's workshop, the baroque style Church of San Francesco, with XVIII century frescoes and a pulpit decorated in pure gold, and the Church of Santissima Trinità, with a XV century portal.
