Description

Mussomeli is a town in the province of Caltanissetta, perched on a hill. The place name probably derives from an Arab expression. It was founded by Manfredi III Chiaramonte during the XIV century; then it passed under the control of many local family and finally in 1549 it became a fief of the Lanza family.
The chiaramonte castle is the symbol of the town: it was realised in 1370 perched on a hill in gothic-norman style. Inside there are large halls, dungeons, cells and a fine chapel.
The remains of an Italic-Greek village are located not too far from the castle.
Among the religious buildings, we have to mention the Church of San Ludovico (XV century), with statues by Bagnasco, the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, the Church of San Domenico, with a crux by Fra' Umile da Petralie, and the Church of Santa Margherita (XIV century), with stuccoes by Serpotta.
