The town's name derives from the name of the god Janus, to which an ancient watchtower was entitled. Municipality in the province of Perugia, located on a hill covered by green vineyards and olive groves, where the river Tiber meets the Chiascio, Torgiano is a medieval village, in which are still visible large sections of its ancient walls and is famous for the production of excellent wines and olive oils. The surrounding environment offers the opportunity to follow nature trails that run along the river Tiber, in contact with unspoiled nature.
The area was a Roman settlement, as confirmed by the name, and an active trading point on the Tiber river. After the fall of the Empire, the territories were prey to the invasions of the Barbarians and in 595 A.D. Goths sacked the town that for a while, had been contended between Lombards and Byzantines.
In the XIII century the city of Perugia, in order to consolidate and make more defensible its borders, decide to restore the ancient castle of Torgiano and in the first half of the XV century, the town acquired a series of rights and was proclaimed municipality. Devastated by the troops of the Duke of Valentino in the XVI century, the town managed to avoid the looting to which Perugia was subject a few years later.

- the XVIII century Parish Church of San Bartolomeo, which is the reconstruction of the previous one, built in the XIII century. It features a façade covered in cotto stone and a single nave plan topped with a small gable. Inside is preserved a deposed Christ by the artist Felice Pellegrini, an artwork created in the XVI century and a painting, depicting the Pentecost, of the same period and a Marriage of the Virgin of the XIX century;
- the Church of Santa Maria of the Olivella, built in the XVI century and restored in the second half of the XVIII, features a highly linear façade, interrupted only by a circular rose window and the portal. Inside are preserved important artworks of the XVI and XVII centuries;
- the XVIII century Church of Santa Croce, with its brick façade and single nave plan;
- the Church of Saint Ermete with its valuable organ of the XVIII century;
- the XVII century Church of Santa Maria in Castello;
- the XVII century Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni, which features a series of frescoed rooms of the XVII century, embellished with antique furniture. At present, it houses the Wine Museum, a permanent exhibition of the techniques of cultivation of vines and wine production;
- the Oratory of St. Anthony, from the XVI century, with an external fresco depicting the Madonna and Child, attributed to the Art school of Alfani;
- the Baglioni watchtower, which is the symbol of the town's coats of arms;
- the XVII century Palazzo Manganelli;
- the Tower Jaccera;
- the Museum of Olive Oil.
