Tuoro sul Trasimeno

Description

The town's name seems to descend from a style of fishing, once widespread on the Trasimeno, the catching of Tuori fish. Municipality in the province of Perugia, located on the banks of Lake Trasimeno, on a small hill on the border with Tuscany, Tuoro sul Trasimeno is a medieval center, extraordinarily rich in artistic and historical features. It is also an important departure point for ferries to the Isle of Polvese and to Isola Maggiore, the latter, among other things, is a district of the municipality. The town is divided into four districts, that each year, during the period of August, compete in a chariot race.
The discovery of artifacts has made it possible to attest that the area on which the village stands, hosted a town of Etruscan origin and a center in Roman times. The area was the scene of the historic battle between the Carthaginians and the Roman troops in 217 B.C., commemorated each year through a historical representations, which saw the troops of Hannibal victorious on the army of Rome. After the fall of the Empire, the town was exposed to the raids of the Barbarians. The foundation of the present town center goes back to the XIV century. Tuoro assumed great importance, mainly due to its location, on the border between the territories of Arezzo and Perugia, between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States and, for this reason, it was often at the center of clashes between the neighboring municipalities, until it was finally assigned to the Papal States.

Attractions:
- the Church of San Salvatore, built in the XII century, with its simple stone façade divided by a gable and a single large window;
