Sagrado

Description

The town's name probably derives from the Latin "sacratum" (consecrated ground), although, another school of thought assumes that it derives from the Slavic dialect and means "behind the castle". Municipality in the province of Gorizia, a large plain situated on the border with the territory of Udine, between the Carso and the river Isonzo. The municipality includes, in addition to the main centre, some important districts, including San Martino del Carso, made famous by Ungaretti in one of his poems. The local economy is devoted primarily to livestock farming and crops, but there is also a sereies of active manufacturing industries. The local food and wine traditions offer excellent opportunities to live in direct contact with nature, enjoying at the same time, the extraordinary angles that the surrounding area has to offer. Interesting is the trekking excursion to Monte San Michele.
The town is mentioned in historical texts since the XV century and was the subject of contention between the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the Habsburg Empire. In the second half of the XVI century it became a possession of the Counts della Torre. In the XIX century it was proclaimed municipality and due to its location and the presence of the bridge over the river, made it become an active center in the XX, in both handicraft and industrial fields. During the First World War the town was the scenario of important battles and bloody clashes.

Not to miss:
- the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, dating from 1901, is preceded by a staircase which gives to the entire building a major emphasis. The facade with the obvious classical lines, is rich and simple at the same time. It features two half-columns, that flank the portal with rich capitals, dominated by a small niche with a statue and all surmounted by a pediment. The building is flanked by an elegant Bell Tower with a belfry and mullioned windows on each side and an outlined spire top. It offers a great color effect;
- the Church of Poggio Terza Armata features a façade embellished with a rose window in the middle and decorated on top with a rich frame. The Bell Tower, which is connected to the building on the left side, features a belfry, mullioned windows and on the top, a small, thin circular temple complex, which gives a touch of originality to the entire structure;
- the Church entitled to the Bishop St. Paulino;
- the XIX century Castle of the Alimonda;
- Mount San Michele.
