Alberona

Description

Alberona is a small town with approx. only 1000 inhabitants which year by year decreases its number due to depopulation. It is an attractive area and the Italian Touring Club in 2005 assigned it to the honour of being one of the "most enchanting districts of Italy".
The centre is mainly built of houses in white stone or stonework.
Situated at 732 metres above sea level with a wonderful view from the panoramic viewpoint "Muraglione" which offers a glance over all the low lands of the region of Puglia and there is no mist it is possible to see the mountains of Gargano and the islands of Tremiti.
The town centre is surrounded by woods that are frequently visited by local people in the Summertime for the environment that offers pure air and a wonderful scenery with small rivers that tumble down hill in small cascades.
Alberona in the past offered shelter to the templar knights at first, that had been exiled by Federico II of Svevia, and the knights of Malta later, that abandoned the settlement when in 1808 their feudal rights were abolished by Napoleon's new laws.
To visit: the Church of Saint Rocco, built in XVI century and the Mother Church of earlier construction.
