Pietramontecorvino

Description

Pietramontecorvino is a town of the Capitnata province and it is situated at 456 meters above sea level. Whilst it's town district include areas between 153 and 950 meters above sea level. It counts by the last Census, approx. 3000 inhabitants that are known as "petraioli" (stoners).
The town still maintains its charm of the Middle Ages. In the oldest district "Terra Vecchia" (Old Lands), there are evident traces such as the Norman Tower, the Duke's Palace (Angioina period) and the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) of the XII century. The houses are built uphill into the rock and still today it is possible to establish the antique settings of the fortified city's wall and fortified house-tower buildings.
This town has been built on a cliff and its district was inhabited in the Middle Ages by farmers and shepherds that often found shelter in the existing rock caves, known as "Petra" in the local dialect. The town was built after the destruction of the district of Montecorvino by the soldiers of Ruggero II in 1137.
The tradition tells that the inhabitants sheltered in the nearby Petra area and started their building here and called the new settlement Pietramontecorvino, whilst the old district Montecorvino was completely abandoned in the XV century.
