Caramanico Terme

Description

Caramanico Terme is a town in the province of Pescara, located at the foot of the Majella massif, between the valleys of the Orta and Orfento rivers. It is one of the most important spa of the whole Region, due to its salso-bromo-iodic waters and sulphureous waters.
Although the first human settlements in this area date back to the Paleolithic period, the town of Caramanico terme was probably founded during the Lombard domination (VII century): in fact the place name derives from the Lombard word "harimann" (district). During the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies it became a fief of the D'Aquino family.

Not to be missed:
- the Abbey of Santa Maria Maggiore, mentioned for the first time in a document of the XI century, with a beautiful portal rich in decorations and sculptures, a work by Giovanni from Lubecca. Inside you can see beautiful paintings and a golden ostensory.
- the Church of San Tommaso (XIII century( in Romanesque style;
- the Church of San Nicola (XV century), whose façade is characterized by an elegant portal, rich in spiral columns and sculptures;
- the Church of San Maurizio;
- the Convent (1590);
- the remains of the medieval castle of the D'Aquino family, lords of the town;
- the ancient town walls and the noble palaces.
