Castilenti

Description

Castilenti is a town in the province of Teramo, set in the valley of the Fino river, on the borders of the province of Teramo. The first human settlements date back to the Iron Age, as the remains of an ancient necropolis (VI-V century b.C.) and the remains of a fortified centre on the Silvino hill reveal. During the Middle Age the town was contended by the local emerging noble families until it finally became dominion of the De Sterlich family.

To visit:
- the Church and the Convent of Santa Maria di Monte Uliveto, dating back to the XVI century. A series of large bronze panels compose a suggestive "Via Crucis" along the path to the church.
- the parish Church of Santa Vittoria (XIV century);
- the Church of San Rocco;
- De Sterlich palace, dating back to the XVI century, built including the remains of an ancient fortified construction;
- the "Fontana Vecchia" (Old Fountain), dating back to the XV century;
- the picturesque "pinciare", poor peasants' houses built in straw and soil mixture;
- the Roman Boundary;
- the "Calanchi", natural sculptures resulting from centuries of erosion of the clayey ground and protected through the establishment of a Natural Reserve.
